MISSION STATEMENT Our mission is to foster a vibrant celebration of Greek heritage within the Tarpon Springs area, showcasing the profound impact of Greek culture in America.   WHO WE ARE We are a diverse group of volunteers united by our shared passion for fostering the Greek spirit. Our purpose is to uphold, celebrate, and present to the people of Florida the rich cultural heritage of our Greek community in Tarpon Springs Florida and the surrounding areas.   HISTORY Greek Independence Day is celebrated annually on March 25. This day marks the beginning of the Greek War of Independence in 1821, which ultimately led to the establishment of an independent Greece.   In celebration of Greek Independence Day, cities throughout the world hold parades, where participants march in traditional Greek costumes and carry Greek flags.   QUICK FACTS ABOUT GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY Celebrated annually on March 25 Since 1453, Greece was part of the Ottoman Empire The Greek Revolt began on March 25, 1827, when Bishop Germanos of Patras raised the flag of revolution. The cry “Freedom or death” became the motto of the revolution. Despite early successes, by 1827 Athens and most of the Greek Isles had been captured by Turks. Because the Greek struggle had elicited strong sympathy in Europe; Brittan, France, and Russia intervened. The revolution ended in 1829 when the Treaty of Edirne established an independent Greek state.   ABOUT OUR PARADE Since its inception in 1981, Founders Angelo and Sotirios Angelatos THE Greek Voice TV and Radio, the Greek Independence Day Parade has been a treasured tradition symbolizing the connection between Greece and the United States. This event serves as an expression of Greek culture uniting our community in celebration.   The Greek Independence Day Parade is held annually at the historical Tarpon Springs Sponge Dock.
